Spectora vs Home Inspector Pro
This is the pair US home inspectors argue about most, and the argument is narrower than the marketing on either side suggests. It comes down to one trade: modern web convenience against the ability to change your report while standing in the house.

The short answer
Spectora
Choose Spectora if you want the modern web experience, frequent updates, and a product that gets a new inspector running quickly. It is where most documented switchers in this category ended up.
Home Inspector Pro
Choose Home Inspector Pro if editing in the field matters to you and you want to spend less. It is markedly cheaper, and its data-conversion tooling makes it the practical landing spot for people leaving older products.
One inspector on the forums joked about wanting 'Hiptora' — the best of both. That joke is the honest verdict: the trade is real and neither product has resolved it.
Who actually switched, and why
The direction is net into Spectora. A forum thread explicitly asked for inspectors who had gone the other way — Spectora to HIP — and surfaced none. That is not proof none exist; it is what a public request produced.

We could not establish a date for this post. We include it because it is the clearest statement of the trade-off, and we flag the missing date rather than omit it.
Where they genuinely differ
Price
Home Inspector Pro is substantially cheaper, and Joshua P. concedes it in the same sentence in which he leaves. Spectora lists at $109 a month.
For a new inspector watching every outgoing, that gap is the strongest argument HIP has, and it is a real one.
Editing where you are standing
The criticism above is specific: modifying the report in the field, and browser-based editing being heavy. If you write as you walk, that is the whole decision.
If you inspect first and write afterwards, it barely matters, and Spectora's advantages come to the front instead.
Getting your existing work across
Home Inspector Pro ships a HomeGauge data-conversion tool. The vendor has productised the migration, which for anyone leaving HomeGauge is a practical reason to look at HIP first.
We have not tested that tool and cannot tell you how complete a conversion it produces.
What each is honestly better at
Spectora
Polish, pace of development, and the finished look of the report a client receives. It is the product most inspectors in this category moved toward, and the people who moved say the value justified the higher price.
Home Inspector Pro
Price, and field editability. It is meaningfully cheaper, and it can be changed on site in a way its rival's critics say Spectora cannot. It also ships the conversion tooling that makes leaving a legacy product practical rather than theoretical.
What we could not verify
- The date of Jason Ramey's forum post. We have quoted it because it is the clearest articulation of the trade-off, and flagged the gap rather than guess.
- How well Home Inspector Pro's HomeGauge conversion tool actually works. The vendor ships it; we have not run it.
- Current pricing for Home Inspector Pro. We have described it as cheaper because multiple reviewers say so, but we did not capture a figure from the vendor's own page with a date, and we are not going to quote a number we did not verify.
- Reddit was unreachable in all research sessions. A forum thread ranking on page one of this query is itself a signal that no good page exists — but it also means the community evidence here is narrower than it looks.
If neither fits — a third shape of tool
The field-editing complaint above is the one worth carrying to whatever you choose. If the answer you want is 'the report is finished when the inspection is', that is a different product shape from either of these: ReportWalk is a phone-first app where you speak findings and the PDF is produced on site. It has no agent portal and no scheduling, so it does less than both products above on purpose.
