Who actually switched, and why
One dated switch, from 2021. The stronger evidence here is structural rather than anecdotal: HIP built and ships a HomeGauge conversion tool, which is a vendor spending engineering time on a migration path it expects people to use.

Home Inspector Pro ships tooling that converts HomeGauge data. We have not tested it and cannot tell you how complete a conversion it produces, but its existence is the most concrete fact on this page.
For anyone whose main obstacle to leaving is a template built over years, that is the difference between a decision and a project.
Price
HomeGauge lists at $89 a month. Home Inspector Pro is consistently described by reviewers as the cheaper product, though we did not capture a current figure from the vendor's own page with a date, so we are not quoting one.
Where each one is written
HomeGauge is a Windows desktop writer with a phone companion. Home Inspector Pro is used on site and in the field, and its users specifically value being able to change the report while standing in the house.
That field-editing point is the recurring theme in this category and it is worth weighing above any feature list.
What each is honestly better at
HomeGauge
Offline completeness and long-form writing. Its own documentation makes the least hedged offline claim in the category — the whole report, no connection, upload later — and a desktop with a keyboard is still the better place to write narrative.
Home Inspector Pro
Price, field editing, and a migration path that actually exists. Shipping a conversion tool for a competitor's data is real work done on the customer's behalf, and very few vendors in this category bother.
What we could not verify
- How well HIP's HomeGauge conversion tool works in practice. The vendor ships it; we have not run it.
- Current Home Inspector Pro pricing from the vendor's own page with a date.
- Whether Andy D.'s 2021 experience of HomeGauge support reflects the product today, particularly after the Spectora acquisition in April 2025.
- Reddit was unreachable in every research session, and much of the home-inspection conversation happens in login-walled Facebook groups.
If neither fits — a third shape of tool
If the thing keeping you on HomeGauge is the template rather than the software, note that the migration is the real cost and a conversion tool is one way to pay it.
