Best Vehicle Walkaround Apps in 2026, Graded on What They Do Without Signal
A walkaround happens in a yard. Yards are behind buildings, under bridges, in industrial estates, in basements of distribution centres, and at 5am in the rain. Signal is the normal condition to be without.
So this comparison ranks on that, not on feature lists — every app here does rooms, ratings, photos and a PDF. What separates them is what happens when the driver walks behind the warehouse.
Every offline claim below is checked against the vendor's own help documentation, not their homepage. On this particular question those two disagree more than anywhere else in inspection software.
The grades
Key Takeaway
Genuine — airplane mode, whole walkaround, start to finish. Bounded — some of it works and some silently doesn't, and the boundary is rarely where you'd guess. Unverified — a marketing claim with no documentation either way. We won't grade it up or down on a homepage sentence. None — the vendor says so.

The one finding that matters most
Fleetio's offline is narrower than almost anyone assumes, and the vendor documents it clearly enough that there's no excuse for the assumption:
Offline functionality in Fleetio Go is currently only available for Inspection Submissions
and, separately:
Pending Inspections will NOT upload when the app is closed or minimized.
Read the second one twice. A driver completes a walkaround in a dead-signal yard, swipes the app away — because that is what people do with apps — drives off, and the inspection sits on the phone. It uploads when the app is next opened in coverage. If that's tomorrow morning, the fleet's record of last night's defect is a day late.
Fleetio is a good product and probably the best-integrated one here. But "works offline" and "works offline for inspection submissions, and only while you leave the app in the foreground" are very different promises, and only one of them is on the marketing page.
Genuinely offline
Simply Fleet — free under 5 vehicles
The clearest offline claim aimed squarely at this job: "Complete inspections where cell service is unavailable." Free covers five vehicles and three users; Essential is $2/vehicle/mo and Advanced $4. For a small fleet that wants maintenance, fuel and inspections in one place at no cost, this is the obvious starting point.
Two caveats, both honest. One reviewer counters that uploading fill-ups and services still needs a connection — so the inspection is covered and the rest of the app may not be. And the voice capture, which the marketing leads on, is scoped to fill-ups, expenses, mileage and issues; it does not appear on the DVIR page at all. If you're buying it to talk your way through a walkaround, check that before you commit.
On reviews: we could find no dated critical reviews of Simply Fleet inside our eighteen-month window that we could attribute to a named reviewer. Its App Store rating is 4.5 from around 250 ratings. Rather than paraphrase something unattributed, we'll say plainly that this entry rests on vendor documentation and note which pages the voice claim appears on and which it doesn't.
SafetyCulture — free for 10 seats
Not a fleet product, but it does walkarounds properly and offline is broad and genuine: inspections, actions, assets and reports all work with no connection. The template library is the largest in the category by a distance.
The trade: no odometer history, no maintenance scheduling, no fuel, no parts. It's an inspection tool you'd point at vehicles, not a fleet system. If the DVIR is all you need, that's a feature.
(If the name confuses you: iAuditor became SafetyCulture in November 2022 and SafetyCulture became Mitti in August 2026. We wrote the full history of every rename in this sector because the confusion is widespread.)
GoCanvas — $1,044/yr, and read that number
A rich client that genuinely fills forms with no coverage at all; credentials revalidate on a 24-hour default, extendable to 30 days. Excellent when one admin designs a form once and pushes it to a whole crew.
The catch is arithmetic. It's $29 a user with a three-user minimum, annual only — so it's $1,044 a year even if one person ever opens it. Owned by Nemetschek since June 2024.
Unverified — claimed, undocumented
These may work offline. We're not saying they don't. We're saying nothing in their own documentation supports it, and a homepage sentence isn't documentation.
Driveroo, now ROO.AI — $5/asset/mo
Per-asset rather than per-seat pricing with unlimited users, which is genuinely attractive for a fleet with many drivers and few vehicles. Pro is $7.
Offline is advertised as "online or offline operation" with no sync model documented behind it. That phrase could describe anything from full local storage to a spinner that eventually times out.
Two things to raise on a sales call: annual contracts are required and minimums apply but aren't published, and the brand is mid-migration to ROO.AI with no rebrand date announced. Ask what happens to your integrations and your support URLs.
Powerfleet Inspect — contact sales
Built for the job — DVIR joined to hours-of-service and telematics, available in English, French and Spanish, on phones and tablets.
No offline statement appears anywhere on the product pages or the store listings. For a DVIR tool whose entire purpose is being used in yards, that's a conspicuous gap rather than an oversight we should paper over.
Not reliable at all so far. Doesn't even work. Glitches and has issues when entering pre and post trips, they just disappear after doing them. — Jesse Jam12 · App Store (Unity Inspect) · 14 May 2025
Treat that as a weak signal and we'll say why: the Unity Inspect listing carries only two ratings in total, so one review is not a pattern. We publish it because the failure described — completed pre- and post-trips disappearing — is exactly what an undocumented offline model looks like from a driver's seat.
The naming is its own problem. Fleet Complete became Powerfleet on 1 October 2024, and FC Inspect became Unity Inspect on 30 May 2025. Support material is scattered across three names, which matters at 5am when a driver is searching for help.
No offline, by the vendor's own account
FleetGO — £2/vehicle/mo
The price is the best on this page and the product is well-suited to UK and Benelux operators who want DVSA-shaped checks alongside tachograph and telematics data.
But their own FAQ says:
You need a working internet connection to use the FleetGO Driver App.
That is the condition a yard walkaround is most likely to be in. We're listing FleetGO because the telematics side is genuinely strong and for depot-based operations with good coverage it's a real contender — but if your drivers check vehicles behind a building, this is the wrong tool and the vendor has told you so.
Connecteam — free for 10 employees
Good product, wrong list, appears on nearly every roundup of this kind. It's scheduling, time clocks, chat and training for a deskless workforce, with forms as one module. $29/mo flat for up to thirty users is strong value for what it actually is.
it's currently not possible to use Connecteam offline, whether from the mobile app, Kiosk application, or desktop.
It's on their roadmap. Until it ships, the module you bought it for is the one that stops in a yard.
What the reviewers actually complain about
Across the fleet products, the pattern isn't features. It's the mobile app specifically:
The biggest drawback for me is the limited functionality within the mobile app (Fleetio Go). — Fleetio reviewer · 16 April 2026
Often times update / upgrades do not make things better. They just make developers and sales folks feel happy. — Fleetio reviewer · 21 April 2026
It's a decent app for what I need. One issue I've always had is that the app will drop my saved signature every so often. — Fleetio reviewer · 15 April 2025
Three separate people, over a year, describing the same thing from different angles: the web product is where the investment goes and the phone is where the work happens. That gap is the category's defining weakness, and it's worth testing for directly — have a driver do a real walkaround on a trial account, in your actual yard, before you sign anything.
Where ReportWalk fits, and where it loses
We make ReportWalk, so read this with appropriate suspicion and check anything that matters.
What it is: an iPhone app for one person who needs the record finished before they leave. Everything is written to the phone first and syncs when signal returns, so a whole walkaround runs in a dead yard. Free to start.
Where we lose, specifically:
- iPhone only. Most fleets run Android. If yours does, this article ends here for you.
- No fleet system behind it. No maintenance scheduling, no parts, no fuel, no odometer history, no vehicle cost tracking. Fleetio and Simply Fleet are entire businesses we're not in.
- No telematics, no ELD, no hours-of-service. Powerfleet and FleetGO integrate with the hardware in the truck; we don't talk to it at all.
- No driver management. No assignment, no dispatch, no licence expiry tracking.
- Not built for a fleet manager's dashboard. It's built for the person holding the phone.
Where it wins: the walkaround itself, in the place walkarounds happen, with no prefetch step to remember and no app-in-foreground condition. If the thing you need is the document — done properly, on site, with the defect described well enough for a mechanic to act on — a fleet platform was never the answer to that, it was the answer to the ten other things around it.
Speak while you walk, and the document the law or the client wants writes itself.
Choosing in three questions
1. Do you need the fleet system, or just the check? Fleet system — Fleetio if you want depth, Simply Fleet if you want it free under five vehicles. Just the check — SafetyCulture, ReportWalk, or your existing telematics vendor's module.
2. Will drivers be out of signal? If yes, cross off FleetGO and Connecteam outright — both say they need a connection. Treat Fleetio as bounded and tell drivers explicitly not to background the app before an inspection uploads. Ask Driveroo and Powerfleet for documentation, in writing.
3. Is there telematics in the truck already? Then start with that vendor's own inspection module, because the integration is the thing you can't buy separately. Powerfleet and FleetGO both exist to be that. Just check the offline answer before assuming it's solved.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best free vehicle inspection app? Simply Fleet under five vehicles is the strongest, because it's a real fleet product rather than a trial and its offline claim is aimed at inspections specifically. SafetyCulture's ten free seats are the better choice if you want the template library and don't need maintenance or fuel.
Which DVIR apps work offline? By vendor documentation: Simply Fleet, SafetyCulture, GoCanvas and ReportWalk. Fleetio works offline for inspection submissions only, and won't upload pending inspections while the app is closed or minimised. FleetGO and Connecteam state they need a connection. Driveroo and Powerfleet publish nothing either way.
How much does fleet inspection software cost? Published entry prices run from free to about $5 per asset per month. The figures that catch people out are the seat minimums — GoCanvas is $1,044 a year for one person — and the vendors who publish nothing, where "contact sales" usually means a minimum you'll discover on the call.
Do I need an app for DVIRs, or is paper fine? Paper is legal. What an app buys you is that the defect reaches a mechanic the same evening instead of sitting in a cab, and that the record is searchable when somebody asks for twelve months of inspections on one unit number. If you run more than a handful of vehicles, that second one is the argument.
Can drivers do walkarounds by voice? Mostly not, despite the marketing. Simply Fleet's voice capture is scoped to fill-ups, expenses, mileage and issues and doesn't appear on its DVIR page. It's worth checking specifically rather than assuming, because "voice" on a fleet product's homepage often means a different part of the product.

Corrections welcome, and we mean it. Prices change, tiers get restructured, and offline documentation gets quietly edited. If something here is wrong — especially if it's your product — tell us and we'll fix it with the date on it. Every claim above is sourced from the vendor's own published material or a dated third-party review, and we'd rather be corrected than confidently wrong.
