Osmotic blistering (commonly called 'boat pox') occurs when water molecules permeate through the gelcoat of a fiberglass hull and react with water-soluble materials in the laminate — typically uncured resin or voids from the manufacturing process. This creates an acidic solution with higher osmotic pressure than the surrounding water, drawing in more moisture and forming blisters. Small blisters may be cosmetic, but extensive blistering indicates laminate degradation that can compromise hull strength.
