The Full Picture

A code violation occurs when a building component or installation doesn't meet the requirements of the applicable code — whether that's the National Electrical Code (NEC), International Building Code (IBC), International Plumbing Code (IPC), NFPA fire codes, or local amendments. Important distinction: most inspectors document conditions that don't meet current code standards, but a true 'violation' technically refers to non-compliance with the code in effect when the work was done. Grandfathering means older installations that met code at the time of installation aren't automatically violations, even if current code is stricter. However, safety hazards are always called out regardless of when the work was done.

Why It Matters

Why field professionals need to document this

Code violations are among the highest-priority findings in any inspection report. They carry legal and safety implications that go beyond cosmetic or maintenance issues. For inspectors, clearly documenting which code is referenced, whether the condition is a safety hazard or a technical non-compliance, and what corrective action is needed protects both the inspector and the property owner. The language matters — 'does not meet current code standards' versus 'code violation' carries different implications.

How this shows up in findings

Here's how a code violation finding looks in a professional field report generated by ReportWalk:

NEC violation: outdoor receptacles without GFCI protection — required since 1973 NEC

IBC: guardrail height 30 inches at second-floor deck — current code requires 36 inches minimum

Fire code: exit sign battery backup failed 90-second test — immediate replacement required
