A circuit breaker that detects dangerous electrical arcs — sparks from damaged wiring — and shuts off power before a fire starts.
The Full Picture
An AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) monitors electrical current for patterns characteristic of dangerous arcing — the sparking that occurs when wires are damaged, connections are loose, or insulation is deteriorated. Unlike a standard breaker that only trips on overloads or short circuits, an AFCI detects the unique electrical signature of an arc and disconnects power before the arc can ignite surrounding materials. Current NEC code requires AFCI protection in virtually all living spaces: bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, hallways, closets, and more. They're typically installed as AFCI breakers in the electrical panel.
